Every year, more than 12,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with cervical cancer. More than 4,000 will die. While these statistics are scary, it’s important to remember that cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable types of cancer – if it is diagnosed early.
Early Diagnosis And Treatment Are Key
With cervical cancer, an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan are key. Unfortunately, many doctors miss important warning signs, fail to order the correct tests, or misinterpret tests. When doctors fail in their duties, the results are devastating.
The Tests Your Doctor SHOULD Be Ordering
The following are tests your doctor should be ordering to determine the cause of your symptoms:
- Pap smear
- HPV testing
- A colposcopy – a cervical exam to search for abnormal cells
- A biopsy of surface cells
- Conization – a biopsy of deeper layers of the cervix
If a positive result is found, additional testing should be done to determine the stage of the cancer. Additional testing includes:
- X-rays
- MRUs
- CT scans
- PETs
- Blood tests
- Examination of other organs to determine spread
Remember, you are your best health advocate. If your doctor isn’t taking the right steps, get a second opinion. And, if your doctor missed your cervical cancer diagnosis, consider taking legal action.
