How can staff fatigue affect you?

On Behalf of | Nov 16, 2019 | Medical Malpractice

In hospitals and medical clinics all across New Jersey, there is a similar crisis being faced by staff. This is staff fatigue, and the related potential of potentially harmful or even deadly mistakes being made as a result of that fatigue.

In a medical setting, even the smallest of mistakes could possibly make a huge difference in how a patient gets through their treatment and healing time. For example, just one staff member forgetting to wash their hands properly can end up spreading hospital acquired pneumonia to a patient with a weakened immune system. This could set back their healing, and could even result in health complications or possibly fatal risks.

A lot of the mistakes people just like you face in these settings are due to hospital staff being overworked. There are often not enough staff members on board to support the volume of patients that any one clinic may receive. Additionally, medical staff often works excruciatingly long hours. The combination of working too many hours without enough breaks and having to cover the work of potentially multiple people often leads to exhaustion, both mentally and physically. This exhausted state is when most errors and mistakes occur. Examples can include forgetting to give patients medication on time, mixing up prescriptions, forgetting about a noted allergy, and so on.
